margin of error calculator

calculate margin of error

Select the size of your desired sample (e.g., 400, 600, etc.).

Select the percentage of the total population who are expected to answer a certain way on the key measure in the survey.

Note: If you are unsure what the proportion might be, use 50% because this is the most conservative measure and produces the maximum possible variation.

Enter the total size of the population you are studying. If the total population you are studying is small or your sample makes up at least 5% of the entire population, entering the population here will reduce the margin error calculated. If you are unsure what amount to put here, leave it blank.

Note: The calculator above assumes a population of at least 2,500 individuals. The margin of error is calculated differently for populations smaller than this. Contact CHR for more information.
